APRIL 2007

After starting off 0-2, the Blue Crew would go on to win 13 of their next 15, then end the month losing 6 of 8, bringing their April total to 15-11 with a half-game deficit against tonights opponents, the Arizona D-Backs.  Here were the Ddrei’s ups and downs for the month of April.

UPS

Russell Martin is out to show that 2007 will be no sophomore jinx as he continues to go all-out night in and night out, including catching all 17 innings of their thrilling 5-4 victory on April 29th at San Diego.

Jeff Kent is also off to a fast start with a .319 average

Nomar has just been sick with RISP, batting a ******** .625

Brad Penny went 3-0 for April with a 1.65 ERA and is aiming to be the Blue Crews first 20 game winner since Orel Hershiser in 1988 with a 23-8 mark

The bullpen continues to be stellar, anchored by Tak Saito, who has shown that last season was no fluke.  Following Saito have been Beimel, Broxton, as well as Spring  Training acquisition Rudy Seanezand Chin-hui Tsao.

DOWNS

What else can we say about Wilson Betemit to this point.  If only James Loney could play 3rd base.  How about alternating Wilson Valdez and Ramon Martinez for the time being and have a 3rd base by committee.  It couldn’t hurt, could it ?

Jason Schmidt, whose velocity had experienced a major drop in ST, will be sidelined indefinately after starting 1-2 and an ERA over 7 after discovering inflamation in his right elbow.

GETTING WARMED UP

After a slow start with his new team, Juan Pierre has slowly raised his average to .274 .  Also, with Rafael Furcal now back in the lineup, Furcal, now playing regularly since being off the DL, should start to warm up two.  I look for these two to still be a lethal 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup.

Mark Hendrickson has filled in more than admirably in Jason Schmidts absence, going 1-0 with a 1.66 ERA and 17 strikeouts in  just under 22 innings pitched.

With the Blue going both hot and cold in the month of April, one could only ask could this be a mirror image of last years team that seemed to do both on a consistant basis.  Will Wilson Betemit’s bat ever get going ?  Are we ever going to see James Loney in Dodger Blue anytime soon?  Only time will tell .
