Looking Back on the First Half….May

The month of May would give me the pleasure of being at The Ravine 6 times with the Blue going 4-2 in that span.  Here’s my May recap….

Dodger vs Giants, 5/9

Tim Lincecum would get off to a slow start this season for the Giants, a slump that still lingers over him heading toward the 2nd half of the season.  A 4 run 4th for the Blue off Lincecum, capped off by a 3 run pinch hit triple by Tony Gwynn Jr. would lead the Blue past the hated ones 6-2.  Rookie Scott Van Slyke would make his big league debut off the bench with a pinch hit RBI single.

Dodgers and Giants fans can get along…. Hey Will, why no black and orange with your Giants gear ?

Dodgers vs DBacks, 5/14-5/15

Though I have no pictures or scorecards to document the brief two game series I went to, I did indeed attend these games in which the Dodgers and Snakes split this two game series.   The first game would be a battle of two 20 game winners from last season as Clayton Kershaw would match up against Ian Kennedy.  Things got a little testy with Kershaw and the Snakes having a little history with each other going back to last season.  A first inning homer by Andre Ethier and 7 strong from Kershaw would lead the Dodgers to a 3-1 win.  Justin Sellers would make a spectacular catch of a foul pop in the 9th as well.

Game 2 of this mini series would see Chad Billingsley struggle once again as the DBacks behind 13 hits and a strong outing by Wade Miley knock the Blue around 5-1.  This would be Orel Hershiser Bobblehead night .  Orel would throw out the first pitch before the game.  Orel had asked former Dodger great and current DBack manager Kirk Gibson to be the recipient of the first pitch, to which Kirk declined, stating that if he had been out of baseball, he would have said yes, but right now, his commitment is to his team.  And I have no problem with that.

Dodgers vs Cardinals 5/19-20

Facing the World Champs in the 2nd and 3rd games of this 3 game series, Clayton Kershaw would go the distance in game 2 of this 3 game set and pitch a complete game shutout 6-0.  Justin Sellers, whom I had the chance to meet before the game during fanfest activities, would crank a solo shot for the Blue….

What up Justin !!!!

The Final Totals from Kershaw’s Complete Game Shutout

In the final game of  the 3 game set with the Cardinals the Dodgers would jump out to an early 2-0 lead only to have the Red Birds rally against Chad Billingsley and take a 5-2 lead.  Down 5-3 in the bottom of the 7th rookie Scott Van Slyke, the son of former Red Bird Andy Van Slyke ( Better known for his days with the Pirates ) pinch hitting for Adam Kennedy, with 2 outs and 2 runners on would deposit a 3-0 pitch ( Mattingly had a lot of confidence in the kid to let him swing 3-0 ) to the left field pavillion, sending this Sunday night crowd of over 44,000 into a frenzy and giving the Dodgers a 6-5 lead, which they would hang onto en route to a 3 game sweep of the World Champs.  Going back to last year, the Dodgers have won their last 7 against the Cardinals….

The Champs are swept away….

DODGERS vs BREWERS, 5/31/2012

The final game for the month of May would not be so kind as Chad Billingsley  struggles yet again ( Haven’t we heard that a lot this season ) as the Milwaukee Brewers sweep the Dodgers 4 straight.  Homers by Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Gomez would be huge for the Brew Crew.   The Dodgers would go 1-6 against the Brewers this season.

And so I see the Blue Crew go 4-2 in the month of May in games I attended.  It was an exciting month, watching Scott Van Slyke get his first big league homer against his dad’s former team, as well as seeing Lincecum struggle, which he continues to do.  How long will he continue to struggle, who knows ?  Later, looking back on June and July.  Given all the different lineups Mattingley has used in the 1st half and the lack of production from our corner infielders, as well as Chad Billingsley’s inconsistency, we still sit a mere half game in 1st place.  What move’s will our front office make to bolster the lineup who knows ?  Will Cole Hamels be dressed in Dodger Blue come this time next month ?  Do we get another bat to add more depth to an offensivly challenged offense ?  It’s always a Good Dre at the Ballpark !!!  And I will be continuing with this blog and as I attempt to do my in-game posts from the Ravine hopefully many of you amongst to 50,000 strong won’t interfere with my uploads……LOL.  You may also notice that I posts my notes from the scorecards .  Keeping score has been something i’ve done since I was a kid.  Oh yeah, I also do plan to send an occassional tweet here every now and then and you can follow me on twitter @Good_Drei .  OK, more pics from around the Ravine from the month of May.  Here’s to a great 2nd half….GO DODGERS !!!!
