Just Like That, It’s Over

The baseball season consists of 162 games. That does not include the 25 plus Spring Training games or the potential 10 plus post season games that 30 teams dream of playing.

Yet when the final out of the World Series is recorded, we ask ourselves, ” Did this season just fly by ? “

KC Royals_Banner

Congratulations to the Kansas City Royals on winning their first World Championship in 30 years. It certainly was well deserved. 3 of their 4 wins during the World Series the Royals came from behind in the 8th inning or after to win. Throughout the playoffs, the Royals would run into some sort of adversity, including staving off elimination against the Astros during Game 4 of the ALDS, which the Royals would find themselves 6 outs from the golf clubs trailing 6-2. Here’s how the comeback kids did it….

Daniel Murphy the new Bill Buckner ?

Much has been made about Daniel Murphy’s error at 2nd base in the 8th inning of Game 4, drawing comparisons to Bill Buckner in ’86. I don’t totally agree. The Royals we’re not in the brink of elimination at the time Murphy’s error happened. Yes, it played a huge role in the Royals comeback, but let’s not forget the game did not end on that error. The Mets had 2 innings to redeem themselves. Murphy’s error did not end the game…

Terry Collins the new Grady Little ?

As we all know by now, Terry Collins was faced with the decision to take out Matt Harvey after 8 strong shutout innings Sunday night, or go to his closer Jeurys Familia as he intended.  Harvey pleaded vehemently to stay in the game in the top 9th and again, we all know the ending…

Who deserves the blame ? Certainly no one person deserves the blame here. You have to like the competitor in Matt Harvey. No serious competitor ever wants to leave the game with the game on the line. However, Collins as the manager does have the authority to make the final call. Having said that, that’s why we love the second guess.

Not discussed is the fact the Jeurys Familia was not having his best series to this point. Also forgotten was Lucas Duda’s throwing error to the plate .  An accurate throw and Eric Hosmer is out at the plate, the series moves on to Kansas City for a 6th game, and well, anything can happen when a team has even an ounce of life left, as the Royals have shown throughout the playoffs. Let’s also credit Eric Hosmer on his gutsy baserunning. Perhaps his gamble made Duda rush the throw ? Regardless, it was quite a play there by Hosmer.

Drei’s Random Bits

If the Kansas City Royals do go on to win the World Series, they will have really deserved it. Twice in the playoffs have they either staved off elimination or came from behind to win. In Game 4 of the ALDS, down 2 games to 1, trailing 6-2 heading to the 8th inning and 6 outs from elimination, like last year’s AL Wild Card, the Royals would mount an amazing comeback against the Astros, sending the series back to KC where they would win in 5.

Game 1 of the World Series, 3 outs from going down 1 game to the red hot Mets, the Royals would come back and tie the game, eventually winning in 14 and are now 2 games from their 2nd World Championship title.

Kobe Bryant now in his 20th season !

Is it really Kobe Bryant’s 20th season with the Lakers ? The milestones just don’t seem to end. Rare is it for a player of any caliber to remain with the same team in any professional sport throughout their career let alone 5 years. Playing with the same organization for 20 years without leaving ? That is an accomplishment. We can probably count how many professional athletes in our liftetime that have not only played 20 seasons but  all with the same organization, such as Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn

Tracy Murray, the onetime Laker known for his outside shooting prowess, will be the shooting coach with the Lakers this upcoming season. I cant think of a more deserving person for the role than Tracy. I had the opportunity to interview Tracy back in January while he was the radio commentator for UCLA basketball for an article I did on Pauley Pavillion for Stadium Journey. For being my first interview, I already saw why he was a radio commentator and feel very strongly he will be a great asset to this young Lakers squad…

On This World Series Day, 10/27… Drei’s Proposals

Royals 1985

Mets 1986

As fate would have it, this years World Series participants, the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets, would clinch their most recent World Series titles in Game 7Flash forward to today, 2015, Game 1 begins tonight. Barring a 4 game sweep or postponements due to inclement weather, this will be the fourth ever fall classic to carry into November. Unlike today’s format that involves 3 playoff rounds prior to the World Series, in 1985 and ’86, the only post-season participants we’re the 4 division champions participating in their respective league championship.

Drei’s Proposal

I love baseball as much as the rest of you. We can argue to death whether 162 games is enough or too much. Some have even argued about reducing the season back to 154 games, going back to an era before many of us we’re even around. I do not see that happening folks. However, if I we’re to be commissioner for one day, here’s my proposal…

  • Reduce the season to 159 games. Have the regular season end on a Wednesday. By doing this, this, I feel, would open an opportunity for a 3 game Wild Card round to be played that upcoming weekend following the conclusion of the regular season.
  • A Best of 3 Wild Card round, with Team A having home field advantage for all 3 potential games. As we all know, anything can happen in a one-game, winner take all, especially when the 2nd and 3rd best regular season teams in baseball collide as was the case this season with the Cubs and Pirates. The Cubs and Pirates had the tough luck of playing in baseballs best division during the regular season. A one game playoff should not throw away a post-season’s chase after playing 162, or in my proposal, 159 games. I will, however, still favor the one-game elimination in the case of a regular season tie.
  • Best of 7’s throughout the remaining playoffs. Sure, the season could potentially carry over to November. We all can and will argue over a Best of 5 being too short of a series, because that was the reason after the 1984 LCS’s, baseball switched over to Best of 7 formats from ’85 to ’93, pre Wild Card baseball.

So those are my proposals. Got any you’d like to throw out ?

Also, in closing, in looking back at the ’85 World Series, on a personal note, I may have been the happiest 11 year old kid when Kansas City beat St. Louis in 7 games, a fateful Game 6 call at 1st base played a “minor” role. The reason this 11 year old kid at the time was so gleeful even if his Dodgers weren’t in the World Series. Perhaps it had something to do on a Wednesday afternoon at Dodger Stadium 11 days prior…

October baseball. The love/hate relationship that never ends…

World Series Fun Facts… A Tale From Kid Marley Marlz

The last time the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets won the World Series, for the Royals, it was 1985. The Mets would win it all in 1986.

Both teams would stave off elimination to win their series in 7 games.

Both teams would win Game 6 in memorable walk-off fashion…

1985, Game 6… St. Louis vs Kansas City, 9th Inning…

1985, Game 6… Boston vs. NY Mets, 10th Inning…

This year’s World Series match-up between the Mets and Royals will guarantee that one of these teams will end a World Series Championship drought. This series will be a feature between the Royals contact hitters vs. the Mets power pitchers. The Mets have caught fire coming off a 4 game sweep of the Cubs. This should be an exciting fall classic.
