So We Meet You Again In St Louie…

With the only LDS series tied at 1 , this ongoing feud between the Dodgers and Cardinals shifts to The Show-Me State for games 3 and 4.  Hyun-Jin Ryu will take the mound for The Blue for the first time in 3 weeks against former Angel John Lackey with the first pitch scheduled just past 6.

RYU_PLAYOFFS

No Shortage of Drama

By now, we all know there is no love lost between these two storied franchises.  If the first two games are any indication, this series should be primed for another dramatic finish.  So far…

*Benches clearing after a hit by pitch to Puig from Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright

*An unforeseen offensive output from both teams with Kershaw and Wainwright toeing the hill in Game 1

*Kershaw surrendering 8 runs in the fateful 7th inning .  Yup, I also thought Friday was money in the bag.

*Matt Carpenter continues to be a thorn to the Dodgers side in the post-season

*Matt Kemp showing he’s still clutch

*Mattingly’s moves being scrutinized once again

All this adds up to this series being tied at one.  The biggest surprise so far , without a doubt Kershaw’s meltdown in the 7th inning of Game 1.  With a 6-2 lead and already 8 strikeouts to that point, you just had to think the game was in the bag.  But even a sure bet can come up snake eyes, as the Cardinals would score 8 times in that fateful 7th, capped off by Matt Carpenter’s bases clearing double and Matt Holliday’s 3 run shot off Pedro Baez giving the Cardinals a 10-6 lead.

The Dodgers would not go away quietly though as they would rally themselves thanks in large part to a 2 run shot by Adrian Gonzalez and a ninth inning rally that would come up 1 run short, with Puig striking out to end the game.

Game 2 would see the Dodgers take a 2-0 lead into the 8th inning when starter Zack Greinke, after going 7 strong would be pulled for lefty JP Howell.  However, as they say , ” The best laid plans…” , and Matt Carpenter, once again, would show why he has been a thorn to our sides in post-season play…

A huge inning ending 6-4-3 induced by Brandon League would prevent further damage, setting up what could be the biggest moment yet in 2014 for The Blue…

I think it’s is now safe to say that the love/hate relationship some of you had with Matt as recent as 3 months ago is all positively love by now…

What are the keys for a Dodger win in Game 3 ?   Will Yasiel Puig and Carl Crawford break out of their post-season slump ?  Does Hyun-Jin Ryu fell no effects of his recent injury and pitch deep into the game through at least 7 ?  How much confidence does Mattingly have in his bullpen ?  These are just some of the upcoming story lines as The Blue attempts to salvage at least one in St Louis, where historically, they have had a miserable time in the playoffs…

Dodger Blues in Mizzou…

1985 NLCS  0-3, Lost in 6 games

2004 NLDS 0-2, Lost in 4

2009 NLDS 1-0, Won in 3

2013 NLCS 0-3, Lost in 6

That, my friends, adds up to an overall mark of 1-8 in the post-season in The Show Me State.  Now on the positive side.  The Dodgers had MLB’s best road record this season at 49-32, so being in a hostile environment will should not phase them.  One of these stats has to give.  Let’s all hope for the latter.  Are you all enjoying your Blue October yet ?

So We Meet Again, St. Louie…

For the 5th time in both these team’s rich history, the Dodgers and Cardinals meet once again in post-season play.  A look  back at what drama these two have brought upon each other going back to the 1985 NLCS…

1985 NLCS … Go Crazy !!! ( Not !!! )

Two of the darkest days of my childhood as a Dodgers fan took place within 2 days of each other.  With the series tied at 2 in the bottom of the 9th in St. Louis, switch hitting Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith, had never homered from the left side of the plate.  Then this happened…

Two days later at Dodger Stadium, one out away from a Game 7, top 9, runners on 2nd and 3rd for the Red Birds, and Jack Clark , the Cardinals lone true power threat at the plate with first base open…

To this day, those of us that we’re around, we still ask… ” Why did you pitch to Jack Clark ? ”  .  The batter that was on-deck ?  Some unknown at the time, Andy Van Slyke,  Yup,  the father of Scott Van Slyke.  Andy may best be remembered with his days as a Pirate, but when conversation of Andy and Scott come up, most Dodger fans from the day will always remember Andy’s brief time with the St. Louis Cardinals .  OK, we remember more for his role on the on-deck circle on that fateful Wednesday afternoon in October of 1985.

Of course, had Lasorda walked Clark, he probably brings in Jerry Reuss from the bullpen to pitch to the left handed hitting Andy Van Slyke, who probably would have been pinch hit for by Tito Landrum.  ( Either way, I would have liked the Reuss-Landrum match up over pitching to Clark…)  29 years later… ” Why did you pitch to Jack Clark ? ” ( FYI, I’m long over it now…)

GUERRERO

Pedro Guerrero slamming his glove, like a Bad New Bear,  to the grass moments after Jack Clark’s home run sailed deep into the left field pavilion…

Seeing Red

Giving a shout out to my buddy Jason and his band Red Sun performing at Cheers in San Gabriel.   What did you guys think I was going to say  when I said seeing red ?

2004 NLDS… Lima Time

After an 8 year hiatus from post-season play, the Dodgers would make their first trip back against the Albert Pujols led Red Birds.  After dropping the first two in St. Louis, Jose Lima would pitch a complete game shutout in Game 3 at Dodger Stadium.  The Dodgers would fall the next evening as the eventual National League Champion Cardinals would knock the Dodgers out 3 games to 1

LIMA

Lima Time !!!

2009 NLDS…. An Early Holliday Gift…

One out away from tying this best of 5 NLDS at one, James Loney would slice a fly ball toward Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday for what should have been the games final out…

Holliday’s drop would prolong the home 9th, and 4 batters later, the Dodgers would complete their unbelievable comeback and send the series to St. Louis with a commanding 2 games to none lead, en route to an eventual 3 game sweep…

I know this is 5 years later, but Matt…

What happened ?

2013 NLCS…Even the Best Are Only Human…

After 5 close games , the Dodgers would head to St. Louis down 3 games to 2 with Kershaw on the mound for Game 6.  Win, and a 7th game is on the way.  Kershaw on the mound, you had to like our chances right ?

Well, even a sure bet can come up snake eyed as Kershaw would uncharacteristically come apart as the Red Birds would knock Cy K and The Blue around for a decisive Game 6 win, sending them to their 4th World Series in 10 seasons.

What They’re Saying In The Show Me State…

The jabs have unofficially began .  So , what is being said in St. Louie about L.A. ?  Here’s their 10 Reasons Why It’s Better to Live in St. Louis Than L.A. .  You may find some of the reasons to be very funny…

Breaking It Down

So these two storied franchises meet in October once again.  How do the Dodgers and Cardinals matchup ? With a healthy lineup this time around and a deep bench, I really like our chances against the Red Birds.  Of course, St. Louis has had a long history of post-season success and like it or not , are one of only two teams to have success against Kershaw .  However, Kershaw just seems to get better each year ( Is that even possible ) , having won his 4th straight ERA title en route to a possible MVP season.  In a short 5 game series, anything can happen.  Will Game 1 between two game tested battlers between Adam Wainwright and Clayton Kershaw set the tone ?  Runs will probably be at a premium here.  However, with a deeper lineup and most everyone coming back healthy, I gotta like our chances to advance …

Dre’s Stadium Bytes, Throwback Thursday

With the Dodgers set to do battle with the Cardinals in St. Louis this weekend, today we pull out one of Dre’s infamous ” Stadium Bytes “, where Dre here tries to do some play by play with his iphone among other things captured inside the walls of Chavez Ravine. Lately, it seems like most of my attempts of play by play have been with Kid Marlz, aka MDario83. Never a dull moment kid !

Drei_Marls_LA

The clip, which will be featured shortly, was 3 weeks ago on 626 night, 6/26/2014. 626 is the area code of the San Gabriel Valley where I grew up. Andre Ethier is at the plate against the Cardinals Adam Wainwright in a scoreless tie. Adam Wainwright has been making some news this week for the Cardinals , be it getting the starting nod over Kershaw in the all-star game, or having his quote on grooving a pitch to Derek Jeter taken out of context . We also cover on this Thursday evening, Throwback Thursday, which we talk about old times, and of course, a throwback to Game 2 of the 2009 NLDS, where we would focus on , of course, Andre Ethier and Adam Wainwright. ( Social media has sure changed the way we view certain things. How did Thursday end up being the official “throwback” day. How did area codes aligned with dates on the calendar become linked as special days ? ) In Game 2 of the ’09 NLDS, Ethier would have a ket at bat against Wainwright, and after the game, Wainwright would give his thoughts on Dodger fans waving white rally towels in the now famous ” Matt Holliday ” game. Wainwright sure isn’t afraid to give his opinions…

Back On The Diamond

The Dodgers open the 2nd half tomorrow night in a 3 game set against the Cardinals in St. Louis . Dan Haren takes the mound for The Blue as they look to get things off to the right start in the 2nd half. Lance Lynn will toe the rubber for the Cardinals. The last time these two teams met the Dodgers took 3 of 4 from the Red Birds. Since then, the Red Birds have gained 6 1/2 games in the NL Central standings and are only 1 game off the pace for the top spot behind the Brewers. Both teams started off slowly but a recent surge by these two have put them back in the heat of their divisional races. These two could very well end up playing each other again come October.

Highlights from the 1st Half…

What highlight’s await us come the 2nd half ? GO DODGERS !!!

Dre’s World Series Thoughts

Last night…

image

An obstruction walk off

Tonight…

image

A huge 3 run home run by Johnny Gomes and a game ending pickoff of Kolten Wong knots this series at 2.  So this series will definately be going back to Boston.   Some unusual endings these last two games.   In the meantime…

image

Yeah, it’s been hard for me to really show any real interest to the series.  I’ll still stick with my pick…. Cardinals in 6.  I do not see Adam Wainwright losing a third straight time in the post season especially at home tomorrow night.  ( Though it would have been nice if The Blue could have seen him in Game 7 of the NLCS )

Getting Over My Post Season Hangover

Now that I have somewhat fully recovered from my post-season hangover, let’s now reflect….

Dre’s Take
“One of the key’s to the Dodgers beating the Braves was their clutch 2 out hitting. Both the Cards and Dodgers have outstanding pitching staff’s. The Dodgers, having disposed of the Braves in 4 games, should be well rested and confident with Greinke and Kershaw lined up to go in Games 1 and 2 in Missouri. The Cardinals bring a ton of post-season experience to the plate, having made it to the NLCS 3 years in a row….”

My words prior to this NLCS Showdown. The clutch hitting from the LDS ? Not much of it from either side during the first 5 games, which we’re close enough either team could have been ahead 3-3 or perhaps had the series knotted at 2. Or heck, that could have been the Dodgers up 3 games to 1 ? Well, in a series of what , again, many felt was a matchup between 2 evenly matched teams, it’s usually the team that get’s that one key hit that ends up winning….

Key Moments In the Series….

Game 1
Don Mattingly’s decision to pull Adrian Gonzalez out of the game for pinch runner Dee Gordon in the 8th inning of a tied game had critics coming out once again, and Gonzalez’s presence would be sorely missed in extra innings as twice, with a runner in scoring position, Hanley Ramierez would be walked intetionally to pitch instead to Michael Young, playing at 1st base for Gonzalez and occupying what would have normally been his spot. In both trips, Young fails to deliver, each time, his at bats ending in inning ending double plays, and Mattingly’s decision making would come into question once again…. In what would be a tight pitched ballgame from both sides into the home 13th, Carlos Beltran’s one out double would give the Red Birds the early lead in the series….
APTOPIX NLCS Dodgers Cardinals Baseball Beltran may have single-handedly beat us in Game 1, but Mattingly’s late game decision making sure didn’t help matters any…

Game 2
With runners on 2nd and 3rd and no out in the top of the 6th facing Cards rookie phenom Michael Wacha, the Dodgers best scoring opportunity goes all for naught as Mark Ellis would pop out, and after an intentional walk to Adrian Gonzalez , Yasiel Puig would go down swinging as well as NLDS Game 4 hero Juan Uribe, and Clayton Kershaw would be the tough luck loser despite allowing only 2 hits in a 1-0 decision, sending the Blue back to L.A. in a 2-0 hole….
wacha_game2 Personally, I had no problem with this display of emotion even though certain Cardinals would have a problem with some of our players emotional outbursts later in the series. After all, it’s the playoffs !!!!! Everything’s big in October !!!!…..

Game 4
After taking Game 3 off Cards ace Adam Wainwright, the lumber would finally show up in the series. Unfortunately, it was the Cards who supplied the lumber, keyed by Matt Holliday’s 2 out 2 run blast to the Dodger bullpen. Cards pinch hitter Shane Robinson would hit a solo shot himself, and the Cards, with their clutch hitting, coupled with the Dodgers hitting into 3 DP’s, including a possible momentum breaking one by Yasiel Puig on a 2-0 count in the home 9th, it would be the Cardinals putting themselves in prime position for a return to the fall classic….holliday_game4 Holliday with the big 2 run homer in the 3rd…cards_game4 The Cards are one game away from The Fall Classic…

Game 5
Facing elimination, it would be the Dodgers who would bring the bats and the Cards who would fail to come up with the clutch hit as Zack Greinke, while not having his best stuff early one, would pitch a clutch 7 innings , pitching himself out of a early bases loaded jam in the first and also out of trouble in the 3rd as well, both times getting Yadier Molina to ground into inning ending double plays. This time, it would be the Dodgers who would bring the lumber, hitting a team post-season record 4 home runs, 2 by Adrian Gonzalez and one each by Carl Crawford and A.J. Ellis as they would stave off elimination and beat the Cards 6-4, sending the series back to St Louis trailing 3 games to 2…. agon_game5 Gonzalez rounding 3rd after belting the second of his two homers in Game 5 notover Not over yet indeed !!!! victoryline Back to Missouri we go !!!!

Greinke pitching out of trouble in the 1st….

Dodgers slug 4 solo shots, back to Missouri we go !!!! Gotta like our chances in Game 6 with Kershaw up next, right ?

Game 6
Well, is it really necessary ? I didn’t think so. But if it comes down to this again next year, I want Kershaw on the hill !!!! Unfortunately he and the boys just had one of those days, and, unfortunately, it was just a bad time to have it. It happens. So it’s the Cardinals who will be representing the National League in the World Series. cards_postcard Does this hurt, yes. Do the emotions run deep ? You bet they do, and if certain St. Louis beat writers don’t think otherwise, well, then they’re just full of it…But as I said in my last post, we win with class, we lose with class….

Other Thoughts
Aside from Game 6, this was really a close series. A hit here, a hit there, a healthy Hanley Ramirez and Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp in the lineup, who knows. But injuries are part of the game and to this point they did a valiant job of playing right through it. It just wasn’t enough….

Yasiel Puig brought a level of excitement that Dodger fans will be privledged to enjoy for years to come. Yes, he did look like a rookie at various times throughout the playoffs ( 4 k’s in Game 2 and his 9th inning double play in the 9th inning of Game 4), and yes, growing pains do come with them ( Yes, even the home run bat flip in Game 3 that went for a double and his stare down of the HP ump in Game 5), but let’s not forget, his presence from the day he went to the big show back in June gave the Dodgers and the fans a much needed boost in energy, some of which may have rubbed off to Adrian Gonzalez as well. And for the last time, for those who did not care for their so-called Mickey Mouse ways of enjoying their feats, oh well, that’s just the way we do it here in our Magic Kingdom we know as Dodger Stadium….

thankyou It was fun !!! Next year, we end this with a parade down Figueroa ….

Bats Coming Alive

Up until Game 5 it was pitching, as well as missed opportunities that played into this being a low scoring series. The bats finally came alive in Game 4 as the Cards slugged 2 home runs and the Blue would hit into 3 double plays. Wednesday it was the Dodgers, on the brink of elimination, who brought the bats to the yard, cranking 4 home runs, a post season single game club record, 2 by Gonzalez, and 1 each by Crawford and A.J. Ellis, as the Dodgers staved off elimination en route to a 6-4 win, sending this NLCS back to St Louis for Game 6…. Yesterday, it was the Cardinals turn to miss some opportunities, blowing an early bases loaded no out opportunity to put a dagger into the hearts of Dodgers fans…. After tying the game at 2 in the top of the 3rd, Yadier Molina would again ground into an inning ending double play, and Zack Greinke would not allow another hit until his departure after the 7th…. I said before and throughout the series that one of the keys would be which team gets that clutch hit. St Louis had done just enough to position themselves to punch their ticket to the World Series, and Zack Greinke, while not on his best, grinded it out . So now, with Kershaw taking the hill in Game 6 in St. Louis against Cards rookie Michael Wacha, will it be the Dodgers turn, as they did, in Game 5, to do ” just enough ” to bring this to a decisive 7th game ?

The Power of L.A. Media ?

Four years ago, after Game 2 of the NLDS, the Matt Holliday game, I came across longtime KCBS sports reporter Jim Hill after the Dodgers stunningly beat the Cards to take a 2 games to none lead in that series….hill The Dodgers would wrap it up in St. Louis, sweeping the Cards 3 straight. Wednesday before the game, I come across Fred Roggin, with the same except this time stained rally towel from Game 2 of the 2009 NLDS that Adam Wainwright gives us so much credit for…. roggin Deja vu going into St Louis ? We shall see…

Who’s next ?….

OK, for the 4th time in post season history, the Dodgers and Cardinals will face each other .  The Dodgers had a slight edge over the Cardinals in the regular season, winning 4 out of 7, with the visiting teams winning their respective series.  How much of an advantage either team may have on one another, who knows ? So how do the Dodgers and Cardinals matchup heading into the NLCS ? We do know that this time around both teams will be coming into this series at their best unlike during the regular season, when the Cards took 2 of 3 at Dodger Stadium back in May as the Dodgers we’re still mired in their early season funk and the Dodgers took 3 of 4 at Busch Stadium in early August when the Dodgers we’re at the height of their post all-star break run while the Red Birds we’re experiencing a swoon of their own having lost 13 of 18 during that stretch…..

Oh how things have changed much since late May.  Let’s see…. Hanley and Greinke we’re still on the DL, Puig had not arrived yet, the offense was in a funk, and who knew what was up with Matt Kemp. Yeah, Kemp won’t be able to contribute, but hey, The Blue found a way to make it this deep into October even without Matt making a significant contribution. Thing’s we’re so bad at the time, the fans we’re getting frustrated, and the “frustration” would reach all the way up to the Top Deck between me and my buddy J on this Sunday afternoon in late May against the Cards…..

Rally Time From the Top Deck…5/26/2013 from Good_Drei on Vimeo.

Allright J, so you did say we’d snap out if it after the all-star break, we actually snapped out if it just before the break, and Dre to this day still thinks you ” jinxed ” Matt Kemp…. J !!!! LOL….

TEAM L.A. !!!!!

KINGS

Even though the puck has been dropped to start a new season in the NHL, the Kings of the Staples Center ice show their support for their neighbors up 110…. This was on Dodger Pride Night last season. Speaking of the L.A Kings , who out there is going to outdoor stadium game against Anaheim come January ? Hockey Night at Dodger Stadium !!!

No Strangers to the Postseason….

The Dodgers and Cardinals share a rich history between the two when it comes to October headlines. 17 World Championships have been won between these two storied franchises, with the Red Birds winning 11, second most in the majors only behind the Yankees. As said earlier these two teams will be meeting each other for the 4th time in post-season history, twice in the NLDS and NLCS. Both teams have inflicted their share of heartbreak on each other during the post-season….

2004 NLDS….Cardinals 3-1

lima3 Lima Time !!! In the lone win of the series, Jose Lima ( RIP Jose ) pitches a complete game shutout in Game 3, 4-0

1985 NLCS….Cardinals 4-2

2 of the darkest days of my life as a Dodgers fan occurred within 2 days of each other. And this 11 year old kid certainly did not GO CRAZY after this series….

You had to pick this game to hit your first ever home run from the left side of the plate Ozzie ?

That home run by Ozzie would be voted by Cardinals fans as the number all-time greatest moment in old Busch Stadium’s history….

gocrazy1

And…

Why did you pitch to Jack Clark ? The question asked in L.A. all winter long in ’85….

I’m still trying to figure out how I picked up enough courage to reflect upon my 2 darkest days as a Dodger fan. I never really came down hard on Tom Niedenfuer for giving up those home runs. If anything, I was actually harder on Lasorda for having Niedenfuer pitch to Clark with 1st base open and 2 outs. The hitter on-deck ? Andy Van Slyke, father of future Dodger Scott Van Slyke. Yes, I am aware that Andy is best remembered for his playing days with the Pirates, but at the time, no one knew who he was. As we said 28 years ago…. ” WHY DID YOU PITCH TO JACK CLARK !!!! “…. Speaking of the number 28…

Guerrero-thumb-362x800-7893
My favorite Dodger as a kid, Pedro Guerrero. Put up some big offensive numbers for The Blue througout the 80’s , yet my lasting memory is of him throwing his glove down in disgust after Jack Clark’s decisive 3 run home run sent the Red Birds to the World Series against their in-state rivals the Kansas City Royals, in which they would eventually lose in 7 games. ( To any Cardinals fan that may be reading this, yeah, Don Dekinger blew the call at 1st base in Game 6, but having broken the heart of this 11 year old kid 10 days prior, my only feeling was and even at 11 years old… ” Hey Cards fans !!!! Oh well !!! Life’s a B***H isn’t it ? ” . 28 years later those feeling’s haven’t changed….LOL .

OK, let’s go outside the yard for a bit. Anyone remember this from 1985 ?

2009 NLDS… Dodgers 3-0

After “reminiscing” over my two worst days as a Dodger fan, one out away from tying the series up at one game apiece, Matt Holliday did his best to ” take one for the team…. ” . Cards ace Adam Wainwright feel’s having 50,000 have us waving white rally towels in Holliday’s presence was not fair…. 2 days later, the Dodgers would wrap up the LDS, sweeping the Red Birds in 3 games….

Dre’s Take

One of the key’s to the Dodgers beating the Braves was their clutch 2 out hitting. Both the Cards and Dodgers have outstanding pitching staff’s. The Dodgers, having disposed of the Braves in 4 games, should be well rested and confident with Greinke and Kershaw lined up to go in Games 1 and 2 in Missouri. The Cardinals bring a ton of post-season experience to the plate, having made it to the NLCS 3 years in a row. Andre Ethier is expected to get more playing time so we’ll see what kind of an impact he has in the series. It’s just too bad someone has to have their heart broke one more time…
Dre’s Pick… Dodgers in 6.

And finally….

cards_NLCSPostcard

dodgers_NLCSPostcard

And now, we , one more time, go back to 2009. I’ll let Vinny take it away…
