Drei’s Sunday Thoughts…Time Heals All Wounds

piazza

Or does it? Mike Piazza. shown here in the Dodger Blue. It’s no secret Piazza has had a strained relationship with the team he first called home , even going so far to say he wouldn’t feel comfortable with LA stamped on his head. As he enters the Hall of Fame this weekend in Blue, the Blue and Orange of the Mets, that is, I’m still a believer that Dodger fans, as divided as they can be, would like to fully embrace him again. In his HOF speech, Piazza may have just taken the first step in healing those wounds toward the Dodger Blue

Sunday Night Flashback…The Son of the Blank Blank

RANCHO_SCOTT VAN SLYKE With Scott Van Slyke last year during his rehab stint in Rancho

Scott Van Slyke, whom Tommy Lasorda once called his father Andy a Blank Blank, would make quite an epic MLB debut on Sunday Night Baseball on a nice Sunday evening, against his dad’s former team no less

Around The NL West…Rough Road for the Leaders

The Giants have just completed a rough 1-7 road trip coming off the All Star Break. Though the Dodgers have seen a couple of blown opportunities along the way, with a win tonight they can come within 3 games of the hated ones. Both teams return home tomorrow night, with the Dodgers welcoming in the Rays for 3 and the DBacks next weekend. Opportunity could still be knocking for The Blue….

10 Years a Good Dre…Sunday Night Flashback…Scott Van Slyke, The Son of the Blank Blank

The Dodgers and Cardinals have staged some epic battles over the years. Heck, I still dread the day when Tommy Lasorda once called Andy Van Slyke, son of, you guessed it, Scott Van Slyke, a BLANK BLANK ( As told by our favorite storyteller who we simply know as…Vin)

31 years later, even the sound of Vinny still won’t stop me from asking ” WHY DID YOU PITCH TO JACK CLARK ? “

58437_1543704079875_7619633_n Scott Van Slyke, Right Field, AAA Albuquerque Isotopes, 8/28/2010

Fast forward now to a Sunday night in May, 2012… 27 years later the SON OF THE BLANK BLANK Van Slyke finds himself wearing the Dodger Blue. Having been called up from Albuquerque, the rookie finds himself in a pinch hitting role in the home 7th, with The Blue trailing the Red Birds 5-3. With 2 on and 2 out, at the plate with a 3-0 count, Drei here tells his buddy Josh ” The rookie ain’t swinging on a 3-0 pitch…”. You really don’t think the rookie is swinging away at a 3-0 pitch, do ya ?

Not only was the 3 run blast Van Slyke’s first MLB 4 bagger, the 3 run 4 bagger, from the son of that…BLANK BLANK… would give the Blue a 6-5 lead over the Cardinals, the team the senior Van Slyke would start his career with. The Blue would hold on for the win and an eventual 3 game sweep of the Red Birds. What a moment that must have been for the SON OF THAT BLANK BLANK…

Drei’s Thoughts…5/15/2016

With the offense scoring 18 runs in their last 3 games the offense looks like it’s starting to get back on track. The Dodgers, 4-2 in the current homestand and winners of their last 3, have a chance to do what they did 4 years ago the night The ‘Stache hit his first big league 4 bagger, sweep the Cardinals. Alex Wood, who has performed well at home this year, will take the mound as he tries to follow up on Scott Kazmir’s gem from last night. The Giants have also started to heat up, winning 4 in a row as they will try to pull off a 4 game sweep in the desert. Earlier this season it was the Snakes who pulled off the 4 game sweep up north. With the Dodgers and Giants starting to warm up and the Rockies lying only a game and a half behind, the NL West could start to be finally warming up…

Extra Innings… A SUN-DAY, FUN-DREI Tale From Kid Marley Marlz…

Marlz_Mascots1 With 4 games coming up against our neighbors down I-5, the rival mascot’s of the Halos have joined forces with our Dodger Dog and The Kid as we all hope The Blue has a big series as they attempt to take down that Red Rally Monkey… Oh yeah, that’s not the only thing Stomper and The Moose are bonding together for. The Moose is still upset over his city not having an NBA team since they bolted for OKC 8 years ago. The Dodger Dog, caught in the middle, has mixed feeling. After all, his favorite team’s AAA Team does call OKC home. Not only that, the Dodger Dog has also been a big Russel Westbrook fan since his days as a Son of Westwood…

13227065_1127510437313048_1773213978151655468_n Does Curry continue his quest for a repeat ? Will Russel Westbrook have something to say about that ?

If Drei Can Go Back In Time to 1985…

BTTF Happy Back to the Future Day baseball fans ! By now you no doubt know that today is the day when all things predicted about the future are “supposed” to occur, such as the Cubs finally winning the World Series

BTTF_CUBS In the immortal voice of Harry Carey…” CUBS WIN ! CUBS WIN ! “

If Drei Can Go Back In Time…

wpid-fb_img_1445460659740.jpg GREAT SCOTT ! MY VERY OWN TIME TRAVEL DELOREAN !!!

wpid-picsart_10-21-02.49.13-1.jpg OK, not quite my very own time travel delorean… In sticking with today’s theme of time travel, we all have our moments when we would just like to go back in time and change the past. This is true for sports fans, especially baseball fans. Especially in this very month of October. Dodgers fans are no different.

So if Drei could just hop on a time travel delorean right now and change just one dark October moment in Dodger history, what would it be ? Ironically enough, it would be October 16, 1985. Game 6 of the NLCS against the Cardinals, Top 9th, Dodgers up 5-4, one out away from sending this to Game 7 and…” Hey Tommy, DO NOT PITCH TO JACK CLARK !!!!  I REPEAT !!! DO NOT PITCH TO…”

On a sidenote, who was on deck for the Cardinals ? Andy Van Slyke. Yup, the dad of future Dodger Scott Van Slyke…

RANCHO_SCOTT VAN SLYKE GREAT SCOTT !!! Hey Scott !!! I say let’s go back in time to that fateful day in October ’85 and advise Lasorda to walk Clark, and pitch to your dad !!! How ’bout that Scott ?

wpid-picsart_10-21-02.37.52.jpg So there’s my one dark Dodger moment in time that if given just one, I would change. Dodger fans…Baseball fans… If given the chance to go back in time and change one dark moment, what would it be ?

Will the Cubs win the World Series as in Back to the Future 2 ? It will be a difficult task for them at this point being one game away from elimination….

Filipino Night to Another SUN-DAY, FUN-DREI… THIS IS HOWIE DO IT !!!

The themed nights the Dodgers throw are nothing new for the organization and it’s fans and throughout baseball. Since the MY TOWN theme night of 2009, the Dodgers have kept the theme nights simple. However, like the good old game of baseball, there we’re hits and misses.

The Hits…

DODGERS_ FIL NIGHT SHIRT Of all the Filipino Night shirts the Dodgers have provided us over the years, this has to be the best . As a true blue blooded Dodgers fan, the shirts should be blue every year. I just love how the signature interlocking L.A. logo pays homage to The Philippine flag.  Good call by The Blue. Also of note, Filipino night since 2012 has been celebrated during the week of Philippine Independence, another good call by our Boys in Blue. DODGERS_FIL NIGHT GROUPPhoto by Edel P

SWING AND A MISS… While I do applaud the Dodgers efforts for reaching out to the Philippine community of Los Angeles, their attempt at doing a Filipino themed Super Dodger Dog was quite a miss. Not a total miss, but for a brief moment, I’m going to go from Good Drei In L.A. to Ask A Filipino…

DODGERS_FIL DOG 2 Our resident Dodger Dog doing his best to honor The Blue’s efforts at this Filipino Dog…

DODGERS_FIL DOG So here it is, The Filipino Dog, a Super Dodger Dog with diced spam, pineapple cubes, chicharrones and Sabrett’s sweet onion glaze. Sounds more like a Hawaiian theme to me even with the ties the Philippines and Hawaii may have with each other. As for the chicharrones, I guess you could say they could be a substitute for Crispy Pata. If I had been the one giving this Dodger Dog a Filipino theme, I would have used shredded pork adobo meat on top of the Dog. Not even difficult to prepare, as any Filipino can prepare pork or chicken adobo. ( If I really wanted to go full-on Filipino theme, I would actually use sisig, ( Leave a comment if you want to hear more on that…) Overall, Filipino Night was once again a success. As for the in-game highlights… That won’t be the only case of robbery by the Young Joc…   And THAT… IS HOWIE DO IT !!! As for ” HOWIE ” did it in the stands…

Let The Music Play

Last week, it was reported that our beloved organist Nancy Bea Hefley would not be returning next year because she no longer fit in with the organizations plans. Well, thanks to the loyal Dodger fans both young and old ( Including this old one here…), Nancy Bea Hefley has been offered a lifetime contract with the organization.  Now how about giving Nancy Bea some more playing time ? Hey, I’m not against in-game entertainment. I get the fact that the overall baseball experience must keep up with the times, but hey, Nancy Bea is just as much a treasure to Dodger fans of all ages as our Boys In Blue are on the field…

Wanted For Robbery

If that earlier clip of Joc Pederson robbing the DBacks Yasmani Tomas of a potential tying 3 run home run had you buzzing for more, how ’bout this from PETCO on Sunday that saved the game for The Blue. It’s being talked of as perhaps the catch of the year so far. With The Blue eventually winning in extras and taking the series from the Friars, it’s even being talked of as The Catch that may have cost Bud Black his job as Padres skipper.

9th Inning… Another SUN-DAY FUN-DREI !!!… From Rancho…

As our Boys in Blue we’re taking 2 of 3 down south in Diego and Young Joc was committing robbery,  Drei here would pay a visit to Rancho to see some potential future Dodgers.

Every now and then a minor league player works his way up to the bigs from the Single A level and comes back for a rehab before heading back to the big show…

RANCHO_SCOTT VAN SLYKE Here I am kicking it with The Stache… Scott Van Slyke. It was nice to see him back where it all started, even if it was at Inland Empire when the 66ers were the Dodgers Single A affiliate at the time. I also had a chance to see him play at Albuquerque. Looking forward to seeing you back in The Big Blue, our offense could use your bat

So We Meet Again, St. Louie…

For the 5th time in both these team’s rich history, the Dodgers and Cardinals meet once again in post-season play.  A look  back at what drama these two have brought upon each other going back to the 1985 NLCS…

1985 NLCS … Go Crazy !!! ( Not !!! )

Two of the darkest days of my childhood as a Dodgers fan took place within 2 days of each other.  With the series tied at 2 in the bottom of the 9th in St. Louis, switch hitting Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith, had never homered from the left side of the plate.  Then this happened…

Two days later at Dodger Stadium, one out away from a Game 7, top 9, runners on 2nd and 3rd for the Red Birds, and Jack Clark , the Cardinals lone true power threat at the plate with first base open…

To this day, those of us that we’re around, we still ask… ” Why did you pitch to Jack Clark ? ”  .  The batter that was on-deck ?  Some unknown at the time, Andy Van Slyke,  Yup,  the father of Scott Van Slyke.  Andy may best be remembered with his days as a Pirate, but when conversation of Andy and Scott come up, most Dodger fans from the day will always remember Andy’s brief time with the St. Louis Cardinals .  OK, we remember more for his role on the on-deck circle on that fateful Wednesday afternoon in October of 1985.

Of course, had Lasorda walked Clark, he probably brings in Jerry Reuss from the bullpen to pitch to the left handed hitting Andy Van Slyke, who probably would have been pinch hit for by Tito Landrum.  ( Either way, I would have liked the Reuss-Landrum match up over pitching to Clark…)  29 years later… ” Why did you pitch to Jack Clark ? ” ( FYI, I’m long over it now…)

GUERRERO

Pedro Guerrero slamming his glove, like a Bad New Bear,  to the grass moments after Jack Clark’s home run sailed deep into the left field pavilion…

Seeing Red

Giving a shout out to my buddy Jason and his band Red Sun performing at Cheers in San Gabriel.   What did you guys think I was going to say  when I said seeing red ?

2004 NLDS… Lima Time

After an 8 year hiatus from post-season play, the Dodgers would make their first trip back against the Albert Pujols led Red Birds.  After dropping the first two in St. Louis, Jose Lima would pitch a complete game shutout in Game 3 at Dodger Stadium.  The Dodgers would fall the next evening as the eventual National League Champion Cardinals would knock the Dodgers out 3 games to 1

LIMA

Lima Time !!!

2009 NLDS…. An Early Holliday Gift…

One out away from tying this best of 5 NLDS at one, James Loney would slice a fly ball toward Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday for what should have been the games final out…

Holliday’s drop would prolong the home 9th, and 4 batters later, the Dodgers would complete their unbelievable comeback and send the series to St. Louis with a commanding 2 games to none lead, en route to an eventual 3 game sweep…

I know this is 5 years later, but Matt…

What happened ?

2013 NLCS…Even the Best Are Only Human…

After 5 close games , the Dodgers would head to St. Louis down 3 games to 2 with Kershaw on the mound for Game 6.  Win, and a 7th game is on the way.  Kershaw on the mound, you had to like our chances right ?

Well, even a sure bet can come up snake eyed as Kershaw would uncharacteristically come apart as the Red Birds would knock Cy K and The Blue around for a decisive Game 6 win, sending them to their 4th World Series in 10 seasons.

What They’re Saying In The Show Me State…

The jabs have unofficially began .  So , what is being said in St. Louie about L.A. ?  Here’s their 10 Reasons Why It’s Better to Live in St. Louis Than L.A. .  You may find some of the reasons to be very funny…

Breaking It Down

So these two storied franchises meet in October once again.  How do the Dodgers and Cardinals matchup ? With a healthy lineup this time around and a deep bench, I really like our chances against the Red Birds.  Of course, St. Louis has had a long history of post-season success and like it or not , are one of only two teams to have success against Kershaw .  However, Kershaw just seems to get better each year ( Is that even possible ) , having won his 4th straight ERA title en route to a possible MVP season.  In a short 5 game series, anything can happen.  Will Game 1 between two game tested battlers between Adam Wainwright and Clayton Kershaw set the tone ?  Runs will probably be at a premium here.  However, with a deeper lineup and most everyone coming back healthy, I gotta like our chances to advance …

Drei Say… Dodgers in 4

Welcome To The Dodger Blue Family

wpid-img_5656236532742.jpeg As many of you may have heard by now, as of next season the Dodgers top 2 minor league affiliates will be relocating within 100 miles of each other in the state of Oklahoma.  The Oklahoma City Red Hawks will now be the Dodgers Triple A affiliate, with the Tulsa Drillers now being the Double A affiliate of the blue.  This is one of only numerous affiliation changes taking place heading into the 2015 season, with as many as 17 current minor league affiliation changes as of this moment.  This also ends another era of Dodger minor league baseball in Albuquerque, a town with a long history of support for the Dodgers.  Albuquerque was an affiliate for the Dodgers from 1963-2000, then from 2009-2014 as the Isotopes.

TOPES1 So long Albuqurque.  It was a fun ride while it lasted…

TOPES2 Late summer evening, August, 2010

I’m looking forward to the new changes.  Minor league team affiliation changes are nothing new, it happens all the time folks.  I really think the change, particularly the Triple A change , will benefit the Dodgers as they will have a better grasp of their players status without numbers being skewered due to Albuquerque’s high elevation.  Oh yeah, Albuquerque’s new Triple A partner ?  Of course, the Colorado Rockies.

Planning Your 2015  Stadium Journey  Road Trip to Oklahoma Already ?

So, you guys ready to make the 2015 minor league trek down to Matt Kemp’s home state of Oklahoma ?  Well, here are some tips for you for both Oklahoma City and Tulsa from Stadium Journey.  Check us out for any of your sports themed road trip tips !

On This Day, 9/18/2006, Bottom 9…

The 4 home run game, as remembered by our favorite narrator, Vin Scully…

With 10 games left and a slim 2 game lead, what late season memories await ?

Taking One For The Team, and A Summer Night at the Old Ballgame

image

That’s exactly what A.J. Ellis did with his bases loaded RBI as he was hit by a pitch to force in the game winning run.   Brian Wilson,  with some great defensive help from Scott Van Slyke,  would save the game for The Blue as the Dodgers complete a 4-2 road trip defeating the Royals .  The Doors now return home for 4 in a rematch of last year’s NLCS, with a pitcher’s duel skated to start this 4 game series,  as Josh Beckett b takes to the mound against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright.

Summer Treats at the Old Ballgame ….

Ah yeah.   Summer time at the ballpark.   It’s that time of year that brings out the kid in all of us.   Summer time at the ballpark.   One of the many treats the ballpark brings us, be it the ever so  timeless classic Cracker Jacks, the ice cream in a helmet for those hot summer afternoons,  or the simple joy off cotton candy.  It’s one of the many treats we all look forward to on our way to the Old Ballgame.

image

Cotton candy ! Red vines ! Oh what joy this man will be putting on some kids face….

As said, the joy on this kids face as he looks forward to that sweet taste of cotton candy on this summer evening at The Old Ballgame. Oh the sights and sounds at The Old Ballgame that bring out the kid in all of us. Even this kid ! Even if this kid is closer to being a ” Viejo” than he is a kid. Yup, that’s what summer nights at The Old Ballgame does to us. It brings out the kid in all of us .
